Conflicts are the business: public money spent in "defense". Fear fuels the conflict: to convince citizens that their struggles (long list here) are justified. Russia does not fear democracy, it fears its own people and its own size. It fears chaos and implosion.
The Special Military Operation is a major conflict. NATO has grown, public money spent in "defense" has grown. Russia has less fear of its own population: a noticeable chunk of its male young conflictive population has been wiped out.
Fear, nationalism, imperialism, etc have been used just as propaganda for classic business. Ukraine was the scapegoat. Putin is a mafia boss. This is how authoritarism stands. Trump knows how to make deals with the mafia. Thugs ruling nuclear empires.
